How to Beat Heat

Aug 07,2014

Somehow I continue to endure the dog days of 30+ humid degrees with a light spirit. Partly it's my habit of taking cold showers twice daily and avoiding using the AC as much as possible so that my body simply adjusts to the ambient heat. I've also got a blender, that wonderful invention of Stephen J. Poplawski, which makes it easy to whip up cooling libations to make the unbearable bearable.

Caffeine Cooler

1 cup strong iced coffee
1/2 cup milk
4 ice cubes
1 tbsp raw cacao powder
1 tsp honey
1 tsp cinnamon
A dash of vanilla extract

Blend all this stuff together at high speed until it's nice and frothy. This is some serious invigoration for summer.

If you prefer a fruity flavour, you could cut up, de-seed, and freeze a bunch of watermelon to make something like this:

Homemade Sorbet

1 cup frozen watermelon chunks
1/2 cup frozen blueberries
1/2 cup milk

Normally I add a few scoops of whey protein powder and use this as my pre-workout shake, but if you're not going to pound this before going straight to the gym that wouldn't make much sense. Use your discretion, or better still, your imagination. Just blend it all together and it turns into a frosty treat. Or try freezing some other types of fruit and experiement (surprizingly, not many people seem to do that). Be creative, stay cool, and enjoy.

Happy Obon!
